Nassonko was an orphan who lost her father at an early age. She was raised in poverty in a slum called Ndeeba. She was forced to leave school because her family couldn’t afford to send her to school; attending school is considered a privilege in Uganda, unlike the United States where education is free to all children. She sought help at St. Elizabeth Girls Academy, dreaming of a better life for herself. She received counseling and was placed in a catering course. Annet passed her final exams in May 2009 and is now working as a waitress and caterer at Best Hotel Busega.
